You Must Sleep With Actors To Succeed’ — Regina Chukwu Sparks Controversy With Nollywood Allegation

Nollywood actress Regina Chukwu has alleged that sexual exploitation was widespread in parts of Nigeria’s English-language film industry, claiming actresses were often pressured into exchanging sexual favors for acting opportunities.

The Yoruba movie star made the claim during an interview on Oyinmomo TV, where she reflected on her early experiences pursuing a career in Nollywood before eventually establishing herself in the Yoruba film industry.

According to Chukwu, she attended several auditions in the English-language movie sector but found the environment far less welcoming than the Yoruba industry.

She alleged that aspiring actresses were frequently expected to engage in sexual relationships with actors, producers and other influential figures before advancing in their careers.

Recalling her experience, Chukwu said many auditions were held at Winnings Hotel in Surulere, Lagos, where several established actors often gathered.

“There’s a place we normally went for auditions in Surulere, Winnings Hotel. That was where those actors used to be, including Genevieve and others. I auditioned there several times, but they were not as accommodating as those in the Yoruba industry,” she said.

Despite being Igbo by tribe, Chukwu said she found it easier to build her career in the Yoruba movie industry because she was born and raised in a Yoruba-speaking environment.

She further alleged that some individuals used fake movie scripts to lure aspiring actresses into sexual relationships.

“You will have to start sleeping with them before getting to the top, starting from their generator guys. Lots of fake scripts were used to lure people into sexual intimacy. In the English industry, it was strictly sex for roles. They didn’t even hide it,” she claimed.

The actress added that her decision to focus on Yoruba-language films has influenced where she enjoys the greatest recognition.

“I’m well known in Lagos and other South-West states, but people in my home state hardly know me as an actress. If I go to Enugu today, nobody is likely to recognize me,” she said.
