Young Man Reportedly Takes His Own Life By Entering Transformer In Benue After Asking To Speak With Mother

A young man identified as Terhide Garfa allegedly committed suicide by forcing himself into a fenced transformer in the Kanshio community of Makurdi, Benue State.

Garfa’s body was discovered within the fenced transformer around 3:45 PM on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Residents were unsure how Garfa accessed the fenced transformer.

Nick, a local, mentioned that the deceased had been heard threatening to kill himself if he couldn’t speak with his mother.

“Someone said he heard Garfa saying he wanted to speak to his mother or he would kill himself, but the person didn’t know if he actually got to speak with her,” he said.

“Later, people found his lifeless body near the transformer.”

Dr. Adakole Elijah, Corporate Affairs Manager of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED), described the incident as unusual when speaking to journalists on Friday.

Elijah noted that the transformer was fully fenced and couldn’t understand the motive behind Garfa’s actions.

“We find it strange that someone could enter a fully fenced transformer. We don’t know if it was suicide or an attempted vandalism,” he said.

“The pictorial evidence shows that he forced himself into the transformer. JED has always warned against going near our installations.”

SP Catherine Anene, spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Garfa’s actions.
