According to reports, the Nigeria Police Force had advised organizers to call off the protest, citing the observance of National Police Day. Despite the warning, demonstrators proceeded to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with certain Federal Government policies.
In Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, tensions escalated when police officers allegedly assaulted protesters and used tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Sowore, who ran as the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in 2023, condemned the police’s actions. He described their conduct as a blatant disregard for human rights, noting that peaceful protesters were attacked without provocation.
“This was a chance for the police to show they are truly for the people,” Sowore said. “If this was a professionalism test, they failed miserably. They responded with unprovoked violence, displaying intolerance and a lack of respect for basic rights.”
He further revealed that three individuals, including a journalist, were arrested, forced to lie in drainage gutters, tear-gassed, and beaten with planks torn from their protest placards.
