Zulum Explains Why Northern Governors Rejected Tinubu’s Tax Reform ProposalGovernor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has clarified that northern governors require more time for consultations before deciding on the tax reforms proposed by President Bola Tinubu. Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Zulum emphasized that contrary to some reports, the northern governors are not opposed to President Tinubu’s administration. He pointed out that the northern region had overwhelmingly supported Tinubu in the 2023 elections, contributing more than 60 percent of the votes—demonstrating their commitment to his leadership.
Despite this support, Governor Zulum reiterated his stance on the proposed tax reforms, particularly the VAT provision in the new tax law. According to Zulum, based on their own research, the northern governors believe that only Lagos and Rivers States would benefit from the reforms, while other regions, including the north, would suffer economically.
“We did our calculations, and based on the tax scheme, it appears that only Lagos and Rivers States will benefit. Our research showed that the north would lose out under this arrangement,” Zulum explained.
He also addressed claims in some quarters that he and his fellow governors were working against President Tinubu. Zulum firmly rejected this narrative, reaffirming his loyalty to both President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I am a strong member of the APC. I was among the first governors to publicly support the idea that power should shift to the South. In fact, I was the first to publicly advocate for Tinubu’s presidential bid ahead of the 2019 elections,” Zulum asserted. “It is unfortunate that the President was misinformed about the northern governors’ stance. Over 60 percent of Tinubu’s votes came from the north,” he added.
