Ghanaian authorities have repatriated 120 Nigerians rescued during a major cybercrime crackdown known as Operation Cyberhunt, following allegations that they were trafficked to Ghana and forced to participate in online criminal activities.
Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, announced the development in a post on X, acknowledging the agencies and officials involved in the operation.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the operation was led by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority in collaboration with intelligence and security agencies from Ghana, Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States.
George said the crackdown resulted in the rescue of the 120 Nigerians, who were allegedly trafficked into the country and compelled to work in facilities involved in cybercrime.
During the operation, security personnel reportedly seized 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, four vehicles, internet connectivity devices and other digital equipment. Ten Nigerian passports and jewellery were also among the items recovered.
The Ghanaian minister expressed appreciation to the Ghana Air Force and the Ministry of Defence for their assistance in facilitating the return of the rescued Nigerians to their home country.
Meanwhile, eight suspects were reportedly facing prosecution as investigations into the alleged criminal network continued.
The operation forms part of efforts by authorities in the participating countries to tackle cybercrime and investigate suspected human trafficking activities. However, the allegations against those involved remain subject to the ongoing legal process.
According to Bush Radio Academy, investigations are expected to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the alleged trafficking operation and the roles of those suspected of facilitating the criminal activities.
