The Ondo State Police Command apprehended a 17-year-old adolescent identified as Wumi, accused of fatally stabbing her foster mother, Mrs. Funmilayo Adelayi, aged 54.
Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, disclosed the occurrence in a statement released on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
The tragic incident unfolded at the residence of the deceased in Oda, Akure, last Wednesday. While the family of the deceased asserted that the suspect grappled with mental health challenges, the command awaits official medical confirmation of this claim.
“The suspect is currently under our custody as we initiate an investigation into the matter. The family informed us of the suspect’s mental health issues, and we await the medical report for validation. The deceased had nurtured the suspect since childhood,” Odunlami affirmed.
Reports indicate the grim discovery of the decomposing body of the deceased, who served at the Ondo State Ministry of Finance, at her residence last Sunday, marking three days since the fatal incident.
A neighbor of the deceased recounted that she sustained fatal injuries to her abdomen, with doors deliberately closed to thwart any potential assistance.
The mortal remains of the deceased were transferred to the morgue of a hospital in Akure for further proceedings.
