200 Jobs At Risk: Peter Obi Reacts As Microsoft Set To Shut Down Operations In Nigeria
Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has responded to reports indicating that Microsoft is contemplating the closure of its African Development Centre situated in Lagos. Earlier reports from Naija News suggested that this decision could result in the displacement of at least 200 employees.
Such a move would not only impact the technological landscape of the country but also potentially disrupt job opportunities and innovation within the sector.
In a statement released via X on Wednesday, Peter Obi, who ran as the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive economic reforms in Nigeria in light of this development.
Obi highlighted that the shutdown of Microsoft’s innovation hub would deal a significant blow to Nigeria’s aspirations of becoming a technology and innovation hub in Africa. He expressed concern that Microsoft’s withdrawal could hinder efforts to create employment opportunities and foster economic growth in Nigeria, particularly in the crucial technology sector, which holds vast potential for innovation and job generation.
He stated, “The recent announcement by Microsoft Nigeria to close its innovation center in Lagos and cut 200 jobs is deeply troubling. It underscores the urgent need for comprehensive economic reforms in Nigeria and highlights the challenges facing the Nigerian economy.”
“The closure of Microsoft’s innovation center represents another significant setback for Nigeria’s aspirations to become a technology and innovation hub in Africa,” Obi continued. “It also raises serious concerns about our business environment for investors, reminding us of the obstacles faced by both local and international businesses in Nigeria, including regulatory hurdles and an uncertain business environment.”
He further emphasized that the loss of 200 direct jobs and numerous indirect jobs represents more than just statistics—it affects the livelihoods and aspirations of individuals and families, leading to uncertainty and financial hardship. Obi urged for decisive actions to address the underlying causes of declining investor confidence and to create a conducive environment for business growth.
“We must prioritize policies that promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation, while ensuring transparency, accountability, and good governance,” Obi concluded. “Additionally, investing in education and skills development is crucial to equipping our workforce with the necessary tools and knowledge to unlock our nation’s full potential and compete effectively in the global economy.”
