However, some governors and individuals in the party preferred Bola Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the party, rejecting Adamu’s stance.
In an interview with Trust TV, the former national chairman of the APC stated that he has never concealed his intention to support a northerner in the 2023 presidential election, emphasizing, “From my consultations and the advice I was receiving, I am a northerner, and I would support a northerner, and I make no apologies for that. I have never hidden this.”
Addressing his support for Lawan during the presidential primary of the APC, Adamu explained, “The party chairman has a role, but with a ruling party, I couldn’t unilaterally put forward Ahmed Lawan’s name.”
When asked about why he was associated with the nomination of Lawan, the former governor clarified, “Well, certainly, I take responsibility as the party chairman, but no one with political and governance maturity would suggest that Abdullahi Adamu, in his capacity as the party chairman, would arbitrarily declare someone as his presidential candidate. It doesn’t align with the process.”
Regarding the resistance of governors in the party, Adamu remarked, “Certainly, there were procedures. I prefer not to dwell on that.
What I disliked about this entire scenario was that some individuals who wanted to gain favor with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu kept insisting there was a feud between him and me, exploiting it to their advantage.
I come from a well-established background, born into a royal family, and I am proud of my roots. I grew up during a time when there was a Northern Nigeria, and I embraced its values, despite primarily working in the private sector. I primarily identify myself as a northerner in Nigeria, and I don’t apologize to anyone for it.”
