This statement came in response to a letter from the Centre for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ) addressed to INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu. The letter, dated August 7, alleged that INEC’s televised announcements included results from 1,578 polling units where voting was canceled due to irregularities and suggested discrepancies between the declared results and those from the polling units.

In response, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Yakubu’s spokesperson, stated that there are no discrepancies in the numbers of registered voters or polling units as reported by the Commission. He explained that election results may be canceled for reasons such as violence, over-voting, or issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), as outlined in the Electoral Act 2023 and INEC regulations. Oyekanmi invited the public to review the detailed information on INEC’s website.

He also clarified that the results announced by the State Returning Officers and the Returning Officer for the FCT at the National Collation Center in Abuja were official and accurate. He noted that the figures mentioned by CCIJ from some local government areas in Imo State did not align with the results publicly presented by the Imo State Returning Officer.
