According to Saharareporters, one protester alleged that the police action was ordered by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. This protest was the second within a month due to unpaid contracts. The protester described how, shortly after they began their demonstration, armed police arrived, began firing tear gas, and started arresting and assaulting protesters, forcing them to flee.
Andy Kor, a spokesperson for the contractors, explained that their protests were a last resort after numerous attempts to resolve the issue through formal channels. Kor detailed that the contractors had been working under the FCTA before Wike’s appointment and that payments for completed jobs were suspended upon his arrival. Although they were eventually paid for past work last December, no payments have been made for subsequent contracts despite repeated requests.
Kor further noted that despite their efforts, including writing letters to the minister’s office, meeting with the Chief of Staff, and informing the Commissioner of Police and the DSS, they received no response. The contractors’ protests aimed to address these unpaid bills, which they estimate exceed ₦5 billion. They have independently verified their outstanding bills, suspecting discrepancies in the amounts reported to the minister.
