Describing the omission as deeply concerning, Obi called for an immediate review of the budget to include provisions for the NCDC.
In a statement on Wednesday, Obi highlighted the pressing need for focused attention on the North Central region due to the insecurity plaguing states like Plateau, Benue, Kogi, and Niger.
He stated:
“The exclusion of the North Central Development Commission from the ₦2.493 trillion allocated to other regional development commissions in the proposed 2025 budget is a glaring oversight that must be urgently addressed. Such neglect hinders the even development and peace crucial for national progress.”
Obi emphasized that relentless terror attacks and banditry in the region have caused widespread suffering, significant loss of lives, and displacement of countless families into internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, making the North Central one of Nigeria’s most vulnerable areas.
He also underscored the agricultural potential of the region, which he referred to as the nation’s “agricultural backbone,” and urged for robust support to enhance its security and development.
“I call on the government and National Assembly to urgently review and rectify this decision, as the region’s stability and growth are vital for the development of the entire country,” Obi added.
