He emphasized that the final outcome of discussions on the budget must reflect the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians, as well as the promises made by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Akpabio made these remarks during his opening address at the Stakeholders Public Hearing/Interactive Session on the 2025 Appropriation Bill in Abuja.
He highlighted that while working with the Executive, lawmakers have a duty to ensure the interests of ordinary Nigerians take precedence.
Akpabio stated, “Together, we must ensure that this budget is not just a ledger of revenue and expenditures but a living document that prioritizes the welfare of every Nigerian.
“Historically, budgets have been instrumental in transforming societies, addressing inequalities, and driving economic and industrial growth.
“Nations that have achieved remarkable progress understand that budgets must not only reflect government priorities but also the hopes and needs of the people.
“Therefore, let it be clear that the National Assembly remains committed to collaborating with the Executive to deliver a budget that is realistic, implementable, and reflective of our shared national priorities.
“We will uphold the principles of accountability, ensuring that every naira spent contributes to the prosperity of our citizens.
“However, we must also acknowledge a fundamental truth: no budget, no matter how well-crafted, can succeed without the active participation and ownership of the people. As an African proverb wisely reminds us, ‘The man who uses a spoon with his neighbor does not eat alone.’”
