2027: Eight Zamfara Lawmakers Dump APC, Reveal Reasons For Shock Exit
The political crisis within the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State has deepened following the resignation of eight serving members of the state House of Assembly from the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the lawmakers have yet to disclose the political platform they intend to join, but their departure is expected to further alter the APC’s political calculations in the state.
The development became public after copies of resignation letters circulated on social media. However, the Zamfara APC said it had not yet received formal notification from the lawmakers.
The party’s publicity secretary, Ibrahim Danmadamin Birnin Magaji, explained that the resignation letters were expected to pass through the lawmakers’ respective wards and local government party structures before reaching the state chapter.
He said the party had only seen the documents online and would make its position known after receiving the letters officially.
Danmadamin also said the APC could not determine whether the lawmakers’ decision was linked to internal disagreements until it received their formal reasons for leaving the party.
The lawmakers, however, cited insecurity and what they described as neglect of their constituents among the factors behind their decision.
Aliyu Ango Kagara, who represents Talata Mafara South, said the security situation in rural communities had deteriorated, arguing that the lawmakers could no longer continue identifying with the APC when concerns raised on behalf of their constituents were allegedly not adequately addressed.
“What we are challenging Governor Lawal’s administration about is even worse now compared to previous times, so we have seen no reason to continue remaining in the APC,” Kagara said.
He further alleged that the lawmakers had gone 32 months without receiving salaries, allowances and other entitlements.
Kagara said their constituents had elected them to represent their interests, particularly on security concerns, but claimed that adequate attention had not been given to the situation.
The other lawmakers who announced their resignation are Ibrahim Tukur Bakura of Bakura constituency, Faruk Musa Dosara of Maradun I, Bashir Abubakar Masama of Bukkuyum North, Muktaru Nasiru Kaura of Kaura North, Nasiru Abdullahi of Maru North, Bashar Bello of Bungudu West and Bashar Aliyu of Gummi I.
Kagara is also known to be an ally of former Zamfara State Governor Abdul’aziz Yari.
A party source, speaking anonymously, attributed the lawmakers’ exit to unresolved disagreements within the Zamfara APC. The source alleged that Governor Dauda Lawal had failed to reconcile with some party members despite efforts to resolve the differences.
The governor had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of the report.
The lawmakers’ resignation also comes after they were previously suspended from the APC. They were reportedly suspended about a year ago over allegations that they were involved in an alleged attempt to remove the Speaker of the state House of Assembly.
Their latest move has added to the political tensions within the Zamfara APC and could have implications for the party’s preparations and alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
