2027 Election Showdown: Akpabio, Abass Stand Firmly Behind Tinubu, Deny Impeachment Plans

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas have officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpabio led a delegation of National Assembly leaders to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit held at the State House banquet hall in Abuja, where they formally declared their support for Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

In his address, Akpabio stressed that if President Tinubu had underperformed during his first term, lawmakers would have taken action, such as issuing an impeachment notice.

He stated, “If this President had done well, would it not be us to acknowledge it? If he had performed poorly, wouldn’t we be the ones to serve him an impeachment notice? We are not issuing such a notice. While 2023 was challenging, I foresee a turnaround by 2027.”

He added, “Nigerians believe that because you have managed a difficult job well, it is time to reward you by returning you to the presidency for a second term.”

Akpabio formally moved the motion for Tinubu to be the APC’s flag bearer in 2027, urging that he run unopposed.

“I therefore move, as Senate President, that Mr. President be the APC flag bearer unopposed and the next president for a second term in 2027,” he declared.

Speaker Abbas endorsed Akpabio’s motion on behalf of the entire National Assembly.

“On behalf of the 109 senators, 360 members, and all 36 speakers and their members, I second this crucial motion by the Senate President,” Abbas affirmed.

Meanwhile, the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) has also thrown its weight behind Tinubu’s re-election bid. The motion was introduced by PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and seconded by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, strengthening Tinubu’s position within the party.

Governor Uzodimma, speaking for the forum, highlighted the APC governors’ commitment to mobilize resources and secure Tinubu’s victory in their states. He expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and reforms, pledging to deliver their states for the APC in the upcoming elections.

This endorsement mirrors earlier support from other APC regional leaders, including the North Central governors, who recently passed a vote of confidence in Tinubu’s administration.

The North Central governors praised Tinubu’s developmental achievements and inclusive governance style, signaling robust regional backing for his 2027 presidential bid.
