2027: ‘Nobody Can Decide For Amupitan’ — Peter Obi Speaks On Key Political Decision

Speaking during an interview in Germany, Obi likened the INEC chairman to a football referee, insisting that his actions can only be judged by how he conducts the electoral process.

“I have not met him yet and, for me, he’s a referee. You can’t decide if a referee will do the right thing or the wrong thing,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that the responsibility for ensuring credible elections extends beyond the electoral umpire, urging Nigerians—especially young people—to take ownership of the country’s future.

“We are telling the youths that it’s about their future. We want a better future because they have a right to a better future, and that’s what I’m doing every day,” he said.

Obi argued that Nigeria has the resources and potential to become a prosperous nation if the right choices are made.

“You cannot allow this process to continue. It’s a great country that can be turned around, a country that has the resources to be better,” he stated.

He added that a thriving Nigeria would benefit not only its citizens but also its international partners, particularly Europe.

“If Nigeria is doing well today, it’s not only beneficial to Nigerians, it’s beneficial to Europe because you are the closest people to us. If Nigeria today is booming, then German companies will do more business in Nigeria,” Obi said.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate also maintained that the success of the 2027 election ultimately depends on the choices Nigerians make.

According to him, citizens have the power to reject wrongdoing and demand a transparent electoral process.

“In whatever role they play, the people can decide otherwise. If the people decide that they won’t do the wrong thing, they won’t do the wrong thing; it’s about the people,” he added.

Obi expressed confidence that positive change is possible, noting that he had witnessed institutions evolve over the years.

“I have seen systems change from the time I became governor till today. I have seen people say that we can’t have this,” he said.
