The closed-door discussions, which took place on Monday, are part of Hashim’s ongoing nationwide consultations with elder statesmen and key national figures to deliberate on Nigeria’s future direction ahead of the 2027 general election.
Hashim reportedly visited Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta around 11:00 a.m., leaving approximately an hour later, before travelling to Minna to meet with General Babangida. He was accompanied by Nghargbu K’tsɔ, Chairman of the North Central Renaissance Movement, along with other aides.
During the meetings, Hashim assured both former leaders of his ability to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges, rebuild national unity, stabilise the political landscape, and restore economic prosperity. He emphasized the urgent need for purposeful, inclusive, and unifying leadership to prevent further national fragmentation.
In Minna, Hashim highlighted Babangida’s historic role in preserving Nigeria’s unity, referencing the sacrifices made during the civil war. He stressed that the 2027 election should focus on national rescue, warning that continued leadership failures could threaten the country’s cohesion and stability.
He reportedly told Babangida, “General, you still carry in your body the wounds of the war fought to keep Nigeria one. Many of your colleagues were not fortunate to survive that struggle. If Nigeria is allowed to disintegrate today through incompetent leadership, the sacrifices of patriots like you would be in vain.”
Although non-partisan, both Obasanjo and Babangida are widely respected as influential elder statesmen who remain deeply committed to Nigeria’s unity and stability, having played pivotal roles in the country’s political and military history.
