Many Northern leaders are reportedly frustrated with the current state of affairs, feeling that the North has not benefitted as anticipated from their support of President Bola Tinubu in the last election. This dissatisfaction is compounded by concerns over the widespread protests during the #EndBadGovernance movement, with fears of a resurgence in youth-led demonstrations within the region.
While the 2027 general election is still a few years away, Northern elders are actively seeking credible candidates to challenge the current leadership. “Prominent politicians across the North-West have been meeting to identify who could provide a serious challenge to President Tinubu in the presidential race,” an anonymous source revealed to Sunday Tribune. Aides to Northern governors have corroborated these discussions, indicating that the 2027 election is becoming a pressing concern among influential Northern politicians.
These leaders face the challenge of opposing President Tinubu after having supported his 2023 victory. They are also focused on finding a candidate who would be widely accepted in the North, while considering opposition strategies that may emphasize zoning and Southern interests. “They believe the best strategy is to support a prominent Southern politician,” a source explained, “but they are concerned about identifying someone from the South who can match President Tinubu’s personality and financial clout.”
No official decisions have been made yet, but sources suggest that a shortlist of candidates is taking shape, with potential running mates being discussed. “A credible candidate from the North-West is likely to be considered for the vice presidency,” one source noted, mentioning former Kano State Governor Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Sokoto State Governor Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal as key figures in the conversation.
“At this stage, Northern politicians are still searching for a reputable candidate for 2027. However, many appear unlikely to support the current administration again,” the source concluded.
