Bobrisky Faces New Criminal Charges Following Indictment Of Four Prison OfficersControversial Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, may soon face fresh criminal charges related to allegations of serving his jail term in a private apartment and bribing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials to drop money laundering charges against him.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison on April 12 for currency abuse, and he was released on August 5. However, the situation escalated when the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, formed an investigative panel on September 30 to probe alleged corruption and violations within the Nigerian Correctional Service concerning Bobrisky’s release.

The investigation was initiated after a controversial activist, VeryDarkMan, released a video in which Bobrisky purportedly claimed to have bribed EFCC officials with N15 million to dismiss money laundering charges and to serve his sentence in a private apartment.

Although the investigative panel reported no evidence that Bobrisky was housed outside the Kirikiri Custodial Centre during his sentence, it recommended that he face defamation and criminal charges for his claims. The panel stated that Bobrisky’s statements damaged the reputation of the correctional service and called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the bribery allegations. If substantiated, Bobrisky could be charged under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act.

The panel also identified three correctional officers, including a former Controller of Corrections, Ben Rabbi-Freeman, for disciplinary action due to improper handling of Bobrisky’s transfer. Rabbi-Freeman was accused of backdating transfer documents and failing to follow proper procedures regarding Bobrisky’s incarceration.

Additionally, Deputy Controller of Corrections Micheal Anugwa was implicated for receiving Bobrisky into the Medium Security Custodial Centre without proper documentation. Another officer, Balogun Sikiru, faced similar charges regarding his handling of Bobrisky’s transfer to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre.

The panel concluded with recommendations for a comprehensive audit of all inmates in the Nigerian Correctional Service and emphasized the need for reforms, including the “decommercialization” of inmate welfare services and the promotion of non-custodial measures to alleviate overcrowding in facilities.
