2027 Race Heats Up: ADC Reveals Three Aspirants For Presidential Slot

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a transparent and credible process in selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

This assurance was given on Monday by the party’s Assistant National Chairman, Usani Usani, during an interview with Arise News.

Usani disclosed that three prominent figures have already expressed interest in contesting for the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket. The individuals named are former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

“We are awaiting the formal commencement of the process. For now, three individuals have indicated interest in the presidential race: Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Atiku Abubakar,” he said.

He further assured that the party would produce its candidate through a process grounded in openness, transparency, and integrity.

Addressing reports that a faction within the party’s South-South caucus had endorsed Amaechi as its preferred candidate, Usani acknowledged that regions are free to support aspirants of their choice. However, he stressed that the final decision would ultimately be determined by the party’s established procedures.

He explained that during a South-South leadership meeting chaired by John Odigie-Oyegun, Amaechi sought the region’s support as “one of their own.” According to Usani, a voice vote was conducted, which reportedly received overwhelming approval. Nevertheless, he clarified that such regional backing does not override individual opinions or the national selection process.

On the issue of zoning the presidential ticket, Usani said it would be premature to comment, noting that the party’s manifesto, policy, and constitution review committees are still deliberating on key matters.

He assured that the ADC’s official position on zoning would be announced once the committees conclude their work.

“While I may have personal views, as a party official I must wait for the party’s official stance. The ADC seeks to reflect the collective will of the people and uphold democratic principles,” he added.
