The party’s National Chairman, Yabagi Sani, explained that the discussion with Atiku was guided by a shared goal of fortifying Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and providing viable political alternatives to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sani said, “The meeting was primarily focused on strengthening democracy and protecting democratic pluralism, ensuring that Nigeria’s multi-party system is sustained and that opposition parties have the stability needed to function effectively.”
He emphasized the importance of early engagement among opposition parties to avoid being caught off guard by legal or logistical challenges during the elections.
“Part of the strategy under discussion includes developing a ‘Plan B’, ensuring that if one platform faces disqualification, litigation, or technical hurdles, alternative platforms remain available so that the broader opposition movement is not disrupted,” he added.
Although the session was held behind closed doors, political observers have speculated that it may signal Atiku’s possible consideration of the ADP as a backup option if he fails to secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket.
Sani, however, dismissed such speculation, stressing that the consultations are broader and not focused on any one individual.
“The ongoing discussions involve a wide range of opposition groups, political stakeholders, and youth organizations, including dynamic civic platforms such as the National Youth Alliance,” he said.
A senior ADP official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, clarified that the meeting was not about forming a coalition but about building understanding and collaboration among like-minded politicians.
“We met to explore areas of collaboration and discuss how we can work together ahead of the 2027 elections. While we are not joining any coalition, we are engaging with leaders beyond Atiku. The discussion focused on democracy, sustaining it, developing the country, and addressing pressing national issues. That is its essence,” the official explained.
More Engagements Planned
Sani also confirmed that similar meetings would be held with other opposition figures and youth-led civic groups to expand the scope of opposition coordination and prepare for any electoral or legal contingencies.
“The focus is on creating an environment where opposition groups feel reinforced and encouraged, especially amid concerns that the ruling APC is attempting to weaken and discourage opposition participation,” he said.
