2027 Sh*ckwave: Obasanjo Brokers High-Stakes Obi–Kwankwaso Alliance
A fresh report suggests that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is leading behind-the-scenes efforts to unite former presidential contenders Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso on a joint ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Daily Trust, Obasanjo believes that an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance would significantly improve the opposition’s chances of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next presidential race.
Both Obi and Kwankwaso are expected to vie for the presidential ticket of the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), where they are likely to confront former Vice President Atiku Abubakar amid renewed moves to consolidate opposition forces.
Sources cited by the publication revealed that Obasanjo has reportedly made progress in persuading Kwankwaso to consider serving as Obi’s running mate. The initial strategy, according to insiders, is for the duo to jointly challenge Atiku at the ADC presidential primaries.
One source disclosed that Kwankwaso recently visited Obasanjo in Abeokuta, where the former president allegedly advised him to join the ADC and accept the vice-presidential slot on an Obi-led ticket. The source noted that this counsel echoed similar advice Kwankwaso had earlier received from former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, who reportedly encouraged him to align with the ADC without explicitly discussing a vice-presidential role.
“The belief is that the current political momentum, both domestically and internationally, favours an Obi presidency,” the source said. “Obasanjo is a major backer of Obi’s ambition. Even Atiku has previously acknowledged that Obasanjo was the one who recommended Obi as his running mate in the 2019 election.”
The source added that the objective is to combine the political strengths of Obi and Kwankwaso to challenge Atiku’s dominance within the ADC. “Atiku is unlikely to step aside, and the party’s internal structure largely favours him. Acting alone, neither Obi nor Kwankwaso may be able to defeat him at the primaries, but together, they believe they stand a realistic chance,” the source explained.
Meanwhile, one of Kwankwaso’s close aides confirmed that discussions were ongoing at the highest levels across the political landscape.
“Although our party has not yet reached a final decision or consensus, we can confirm that high-level consultations are taking place with key stakeholders, including political parties and influential individuals,” the aide said.
He added that the movement was driven by a shared conviction that Nigeria urgently needs a shift away from the prevailing challenges of insecurity and systemic collapse.
“Our position will be made public soon. We urge Nigerians to remain patient and continue supporting our efforts as we work toward building a better and more secure nation for all,” the aide stated.
The aide was responding to enquiries about a reported meeting involving Kwankwaso, Obasanjo, and Obi last week. While the former Kano governor neither confirmed nor denied the meeting, sources indicated that two strategic pathways were being explored to ensure that an Obi–Kwankwaso ticket becomes a major force in the 2027 presidential contest.
