Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the former Kaduna Central Senator argued that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), through which Jonathan rose to power in 2011, has since lost its unity and identity.

Sani said, “Every election season, Jonathan’s name comes up. While it is ultimately his choice to contest, my candid advice is that he shouldn’t. The PDP of today is not the PDP he once knew. In the South-West, for instance, some members openly endorse the president, while others are in alliances. That’s not the same party he led before. He would only be wasting his time.”

Jonathan, who became president in 2010 after the death of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, was later elected in 2011 under the PDP platform and served until 2015. His re-election bid in 2015 ended in defeat to Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Although constitutionally eligible to serve one more term, Jonathan has not declared interest in re-entering the race. Nonetheless, his name continues to dominate political discussions, especially around proposals for a single-term presidency zoned to the South. The emergence of a new opposition coalition recently floated by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has also intensified the debate.

However, Sani dismissed the coalition, saying it offers no real ideological alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s government.

“Yes, democracy allows for opposition, but if the only agenda is to oust Tinubu without presenting a distinct vision or system of governance, then there’s no real substance. Those in this coalition are not ideologically different from Tinubu’s camp. Their policies echo the same liberal economic choices — devaluation, subsidy removal, and the rest,” he added.
