2027 Tension: Ejimakor Blasts Move To Prosecute Sowore, Says It Will Damage Nigeria’s Democracy

In a post shared on his account, Ejimakor drew parallels with the political trial and conviction of Obafemi Awolowo in the 1960s, arguing that the episode contributed to the political turmoil that culminated in a military coup and the Nigerian civil war.

He warned that adopting similar hardline measures against political opponents in the build-up to an election could have serious consequences for the country’s democracy.

Ejimakor also urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the decision to prosecute Sowore over what he described as a social media post, insisting that the matter should not be allowed to escalate.

According to him, “Repeating such heavy-handed tactics against political opponents near an election cycle is a dangerous gamble.

“The surprise court appearance of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, on July 27 was a missed opportunity to apply the brakes.

“Rather than escalating the state’s fight against an active presidential candidate, the Attorney-General should return to court at the next hearing, enter a nolle prosequi, and discontinue the case.

“Subjecting a presidential candidate to the rigours of trial so close to a general election creates terrible democratic optics.

“It projects weakness and fear of opposition rather than democratic confidence. It is time to discontinue the case and protect our democratic stability.”
