Covenant University, the University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have emerged as the highest-ranked Nigerian universities in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the three institutions were placed within the 801–1000 global ranking band in the latest edition of the rankings released by Times Higher Education.

The 2027 edition is one of the most extensive THE World University Rankings, covering more than 2,200 research-intensive universities across 118 countries and territories. Nigeria had 29 institutions featured in the latest global ranking.

Covenant University, UI and UNILAG were therefore grouped within the same global band, making them the Nigerian institutions with the highest placement in the 2027 edition.

Several other Nigerian universities also featured in the rankings. Among them were Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, Landmark University and the University of Ilorin, which were placed in the 1001–1200 band.

Babcock University, Osun State University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were among the institutions placed in the 1201–1400 band, while other universities appeared in lower ranking bands extending beyond 2000.

The latest edition also featured a number of Nigerian institutions that were newly included in the global rankings. These included Osun State University, the University of Maiduguri, Kwara State University, Olabisi Onabanjo University and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

Times Higher Education assesses universities using indicators covering areas such as teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook.

The 2027 ranking represents a broader global assessment than previous editions, with THE introducing more detailed ranking bands to provide greater differentiation among institutions.

The inclusion of 29 Nigerian universities in the latest edition highlights the country’s growing representation in the global higher education rankings, with Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos occupying the highest Nigerian ranking band in the 2027 list.
