Mohbad’s D3ath: IGP Orders Fresh Investigation Into Singer’s Controversial Passing
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a request by the family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, for a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the development was disclosed by the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, who said the Aloba family submitted a petition to the Inspector-General of Police on April 14, 2026. The petition was subsequently received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.
The lawyer said the petition raised concerns about issues identified during the earlier investigative process and called for a fresh examination of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Following the submission, the IGP approved the request and directed that the matter be forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for further investigation. The case was subsequently assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau.
Ogungbe said a representative of the Aloba family had already been invited by the new investigative team and had commenced engagement with the officers handling the matter.
The fresh police investigation comes shortly after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate suit filed by the Break the Silence Foundation seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death. The court dismissed the suit on September 25, 2026, after finding that the foundation had not provided sufficient evidence to support its claims.
The Aloba family has maintained that the dismissal of that separate suit should not be confused with its own petition to the Inspector-General of Police. According to the family’s lawyer, the police investigation initiated through the family’s petition is a separate process and remains ongoing.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His death generated widespread public concern and led to investigations and a coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding his final days. Questions about his death have continued to generate public interest, with the family maintaining its demand for further investigation.
The family has said it will continue to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant information, documents, witnesses and other materials that could assist the new investigative process.
The latest development means investigators from the Special Enquiry Bureau are now expected to examine the issues raised in the family’s petition as the police continue their fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
