4-Month-Old Baby Kidnapped By Suspected Ritualists In A-Ibom

Gunmen suspected to have ritualistic intentions have abducted a four-month-old baby boy in Enen-Atai village, Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. According to reports gathered on Monday, the incident occurred around 3:00 am last Saturday.

The distressed parents of the abducted baby boy recounted the harrowing experience to journalists, detailing how armed individuals invaded their quiet community, forcibly entered their home, and seized their child at gunpoint. Udeme Eyo, the father of the baby, whose family resides near the Primary School at East Itam zone, lamented that despite attempts to seek assistance from neighbors, the criminals had fled the scene before help could arrive.

Describing the terrifying ordeal, Eyo said, “I was half asleep when I heard the bang on the door. I immediately jumped out of bed, but the door was forcefully opened. Two armed men entered, demanding my son. When I attempted to intervene, they brandished guns and machetes.”

“While one assailant aimed a torchlight and gun at us, the other snatched our baby from his mother’s arms and fled to where their car was parked across the road, speeding away with our child,” Eyo added.

The distraught parents have appealed to the government, security agencies, and the community for assistance. They have also reported the abduction to the police. Eyo expressed deep concern for his traumatized wife, who had recently lost their first child at a similar age, stating, “We are completely confused and devastated.”

Prof. Efanga Usua, the village head of Enen-Atai, expressed shock and disappointment, noting that such incidents were rare in the area until recently when unknown gunmen abducted a baby from a mentally challenged woman.

Plans are underway to convene a meeting of traditional rulers, youths, and stakeholders to address the escalating insecurity. Measures such as enforcing a ban on motorcycle operations after 8:00 pm and increasing vigilante patrols are being considered to prevent similar occurrences.

The Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) at Ayadehe Police Station, Mr. Bokime Bassey, confirmed the incident, assuring the public that investigations were ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and deliver justice. Despite the challenges, the police remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of the community.

The abduction has sparked fear and concern among residents, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable members of society.
