A reliable EFCC source told Vanguard on Monday that Malami’s daily reporting is a compulsory requirement for his temporary release and forms part of an intensive investigation into the whereabouts of an alleged $490 million Abacha loot recovered through a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT) arrangement.

Malami, who responded to the EFCC’s invitation on Saturday, November 28, has also been restricted from leaving the country for the next month after his international passport was confiscated by the agency.

According to the source, “We seized his passport—it’s routine during investigations. But he must report at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja every day for the next month.

“He will be reporting for further investigation throughout December.

“He will report every day, from December 1st to December 31st, and appear before the team of investigators daily.

“This schedule is necessary because of the volume of the investigation and the seriousness of the allegations.”

The source emphasized that investigators want clarity on the management of the recovered funds, noting that Malami has several issues to address.

“We have asked him to explain the whereabouts of the $490 million Abacha loot recovered through MLAT,” the source added. “We didn’t say he stole the money, but he must account for it. That is one of the key issues he will address.”

The EFCC says the large volume of documents involved, the need for comprehensive interviews, and the gravity of the allegations necessitated the seizure of his passport and the requirement for continuous questioning.

In a separate statement issued Monday by his media aide, Mohammed Doka, Malami confirmed his interaction with the EFCC but dismissed the probe as a “political witch-hunt.”
