The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Lawan, made this announcement during a press briefing held at the police headquarters in Maiduguri.
He commended Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s administration for revising the Borno Penal Code, which, according to him, facilitated the successful convictions and introduced stricter penalties for criminals.
Furthermore, Commissioner Lawan praised the vigilance of Borno residents, acknowledging their commitment to security and their prompt provision of valuable information to the police for necessary actions.
He cited a specific case involving a 37-year-old man named Hamisu Dauda from Panshani village in Shani LGA, who allegedly raped a 62-year-old woman and robbed her of N42,700. Another incident involved a 25-year-old individual named Umar Goni, who stabbed a 35-year-old man, Zarami Modu, for allegedly enticing his wife.
The Commissioner attributed the success in crime control to the recently enacted Borno State Penal Code Law of 2023 and other related measures, which were signed into law as part of Governor Zulum’s efforts to restore peace and promote sustainable growth and development in the state.
