621 Arrested For Illegal Activities In Nigeria’s Forests And National ReservesA total of 621 individuals have been arrested for engaging in criminal activities within Nigeria’s forests and national parks, which have become refuge areas for serious offenses. The arrests were confirmed by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in a statement issued on Monday. Zakari Mijinyawa, Director of Legal Services at ONSA, revealed during a press briefing by the Strategic Communications Interagency Policy Committee (SCIPC) that the arrests took place between January and October 2024. He highlighted the growing trend of criminals using national parks and forests as hideouts, which has become a pressing national security concern for Nigeria.
In response to the situation, the National Park Service has ramped up security efforts, including conducting trans-border patrols and forming a cooperation agreement with Cameroon. Mijinyawa also noted that over this period, 466 individuals were prosecuted, 61 cases were resolved out of court, and the Service remains committed to enforcing regulations and safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources.
