Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this appeal after an executive session attended by 75 Senators, despite rumors that some might have left the country in anticipation of the protests.

This appeal comes amid rising concerns about the August 1 protests, with various leaders urging organizers to reconsider. Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has requested that protest organizers share necessary information to maintain public order.

Additionally, Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun have all urged the organizers to cancel the protests to preserve peace. In contrast, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has supported the protests.

In related news, the Federal Government has issued a new security alert ahead of the planned nationwide protest. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, expressed concerns that the protests could be exploited by bandits and insurgents. He urged Nigerians to engage with the government through dialogue rather than protests, emphasizing that the administration is working to address current issues and fulfill its campaign promises.
