Atiku Abubakar emphasized that the documentary underscores the inadequacy of government palliatives to address the economic and social challenges facing the nation. He noted that the situation aligns with a report from the World Food Programme, which indicates that approximately 4.4 million Nigerians are experiencing extreme hunger.

In a statement on the X platform, Atiku said, “I am deeply troubled by the growing hunger crisis affecting millions of Nigerian children, now estimated at around 4.4 million according to the World Food Programme. Madina Maishanu’s BBC report provides a stark portrayal of the dire conditions in Katsina State, highlighting the severe hardships endured by our most vulnerable populations.”

He called for urgent and comprehensive action from both national and state governments to address the root causes of the crisis. He criticized short-term solutions, such as grain procurement, as inadequate, advocating instead for a more sustainable approach.

“Atiku stressed the need for a holistic strategy to address hunger, which includes improving security to ensure farmers can safely access their lands. The government must focus on long-term measures to control food inflation, enhance security, and stabilize the forex rate to ensure food security for all Nigerians.

“Specifically, the Katsina State government should follow expert recommendations, invest in agricultural development, support farmers, and implement measures to prevent further displacement of communities. Collaboration with humanitarian organizations and the international community is also essential to alleviate the crisis and work towards a more secure future for all Nigerians,” Atiku added.
