The federal government, in line with its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in healthcare, officially opened the Sustainable Development Multipurpose Hospital in Ugwunagbo, Abia State on Wednesday. Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, emphasized the government’s dedication to providing accessible and affordable healthcare nationwide.

Highlighting Abia State’s progress in reducing maternal and child mortality, Orelope-Adefulire noted a significant decline in maternal mortality rates from 1047 to 136 per 100,000 persons since 2020. Originally named the “Mother and Child Hospital,” Governor Alex Otti renamed it to the “Sustainable Development Multipurpose Hospital” to encompass broader healthcare needs.

Governor Otti expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support in completing the project and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to healthcare, allocating 15% of the state budget to healthcare services. He praised the federal government’s collaboration in advancing healthcare goals aligned with SDG 3, aimed at reducing maternal mortality.

Looking ahead, Otti outlined plans to establish a comprehensive medical village and residency programs within the hospital to attract medical professionals and reduce medical tourism expenditures abroad. The state government is set to assume management of the hospital, supported by additional infrastructure for staff accommodations to enhance its operational efficiency.
