According to reports, gunmen suspected to be herdsmen kidnapped the passengers on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. The victims, primarily students from tertiary institutions in Ebonyi State, were traveling in a commercial bus from Awka, Anambra State to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State’s capital, when the incident occurred.

In a statement released on Friday, July 19, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson for the command, disclosed that security operatives successfully rescued 13 passengers, while three others are still missing.

Ndukwe criticized reports of the kidnapping as “false, mischievous, and misleading,” emphasizing that the incident was an attempted abduction that triggered a swift response from joint security forces. The operation led to the rescue of 13 occupants of a Nissan commercial bus, with three individuals escaping into nearby bushes during the attack yet to be located.

Enugu State Police Commissioner Kanayo Uzuegbu has ordered continuous efforts to locate and rescue the missing victims, alongside pursuing the perpetrators. He affirmed the commitment of the police to collaborate closely with neighboring states’ security agencies to enhance security along major highways.

The statement underscored ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of travelers and deter criminal activities along the Enugu-Abakaliki expressway.
