Gbadebo Issues Warning Against Using Oro Tradition On Protesters

Rhodes-Vivour’s statement on Thursday followed an announcement by the Lagospedia X handle on Wednesday, which revealed plans for Oro rituals to take place from August 1 to 15 in Lagos. There were allegations that the Lagos State government sponsored the Oro event to deter the scheduled “EndbadgovernanceinNigeria” protest set for August 1.

“The campaign by APC propaganda handles to use Oro – a sacred ritual in Yoruba land – to threaten protesters is an assault on our traditional institution,” Rhodes-Vivour remarked. He criticized attempts to trivialize this revered ritual for political purposes, emphasizing that such actions undermine Yoruba culture and erode respect for traditional institutions.

“The Yoruba uphold principles of justice and fairness, integral to our identity. This is why our community does not tolerate authoritarianism, even from revered leaders,” Rhodes-Vivour explained.

While advocating for peace and urging youths to demonstrate patience, Rhodes-Vivour strongly defended their right to peaceful assembly. He called upon traditional leaders to condemn any misuse of Oro and protect the sanctity of Yoruba cultural practices and institutions.

“I urge our youth to maintain calm while asserting their right to peacefully assemble. It’s crucial that our esteemed traditional leaders speak out against any abuse of our traditions and safeguard our revered institutions,” Rhodes-Vivour concluded.
