Federal Government Explains Delay In Implementing Direct Monthly Allocations To Local Governments
The Nigerian federal government has announced that it has not yet started the distribution of monthly allocations to local government areas across the country.
Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, revealed this during a media briefing, citing practical challenges causing the delay.
This disclosure comes after a recent Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy, which stated that funds from the Federation Account should be directly allocated to the 774 local government councils, bypassing state governors.
However, Edun mentioned that the court’s decision has not been formally conveyed to the Attorney General of the Federation for thorough examination and implementation.
He also noted that a committee has been established by the federal government to assess the feasibility of complying with the court’s judgement.
