Faloye conveyed Afenifere’s stance during an interview on Arise TV’s Morning Show, clarifying that while the group would not actively participate in the protests, it fully supports the protesters’ exercise of their fundamental rights.
Afenifere pointed to widespread hunger and stringent economic measures as catalysts for the planned protests, criticizing the government’s superficial palliative efforts. Faloye emphasized the group’s longstanding call for comprehensive economic and political reforms, contrasting these with what it perceives as inadequate palliative measures.
“Afenifere acknowledges and supports the rights of Nigerians to peaceful protest against government policies deemed anti-people,” Faloye affirmed. He underscored that while the group does not endorse violence, it stands in solidarity with peaceful demonstrations aimed at addressing citizens’ grievances.
Regarding Tinubu’s policies, Faloye suggested that the administration’s actions have provoked public discontent, culminating in what he described as an organic reaction rather than mere endorsement of the protests.
“We support anyone seeking to protest against government policies perceived as detrimental to the populace,” Faloye concluded, emphasizing Afenifere’s position against violence and its alignment with peaceful means of expressing dissent.
