In a letter dated Friday and signed by Damilare Adenola, the group’s Director of Mobilisation, they outlined their needs, including 24-hour power supply, toilet facilities, water, and security for the participants.
The letter, titled ‘Request for Use of Eagle Square Abuja for #EndBadGovernance Protest,’ stated, “As organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protest, which will run from August 1 to 10, 2024, we request to use Eagle Square as a central location for Nigerians to gather and demand better governance. This request includes day-and-night access to this national asset for the duration of the protest, which might extend beyond ten days if necessary to address ongoing national issues.”
The group also asked for the same level of respect and facilities given to foreign and local dignitaries previously using the square and requested the removal of the outer wire mesh barrier facing the Aso Rock Villa to facilitate access.
In response to the planned protest, the FCT police have deployed 4,200 officers across the capital and stationed explosive ordnance device experts at key locations. According to spokesperson Josephine Adeh, this deployment aims to ensure public safety, protect protesters, and prevent any disruptions by unauthorized groups. She added that operations, including raids on identified trouble spots and stop-and-search activities, will be carried out in coordination with other security agencies.
