Tensions Rise As PDP And Kwara Government Disagree On Palliative Distribution

The PDP has criticized the N50,000 empowerment initiative, which benefits 150 individuals per ward under the Kwara State Investment Programme, as a ploy to gain voter support ahead of the local government elections scheduled for September 21.

In response, the government argued that it has been providing empowerment tools to youths to support their businesses since 2020.

PDP Publicity Secretary Olusegun Adewara issued a statement urging Kwara residents to remain cautious and not be influenced by the recent reintroduction of the Subsidised Transport Palliative Programme by the state government, which coincides with the upcoming local elections.

The statement highlighted that, in addition to the subsidized transport palliative, the government is reportedly compiling a list of 150 individuals from each ward to receive N50,000 each, costing approximately N700 million.

The PDP accused Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of attempting to mislead the public and manipulate the elections through these measures after six years of what it describes as poor governance. The party also alleged that the governor may be considering borrowing an additional N20 billion to fund his party’s electoral ambitions.

Additionally, the PDP pointed out that the recent Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments means that power now lies with the grassroots level.
