Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic illness transmitted through contact with food or items contaminated by infected rodents or humans. Symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, general weakness, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, chest pain, and severe cases can involve unexplained bleeding from various body openings.
According to the NCDC, Edo State reported four cases, Bauchi two, and Kogi one case, with no deaths occurring during this period. In total, 163 deaths were reported in 2024, with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 17.0 percent, a slight decrease from the 17.3 percent recorded in the same period of 2023.
The agency noted that 66 percent of the confirmed cases in 2024 were from Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi States, while 34 percent were spread across 25 other states. To date, 28 states have recorded at least one confirmed case of Lassa fever across 125 local government areas.
Challenges in combating Lassa fever include late presentation of cases, high treatment costs, poor environmental sanitation, and low community awareness. The NCDC highlighted that individuals aged 31 to 40 were most affected, but no health workers were reported infected.
The NCDC emphasized the importance of heightened surveillance and preventive measures and urged the public to follow safety protocols and report symptoms to local health authorities. The agency is intensifying contact tracing and control measures and will continue to monitor the situation closely, coordinating responses with state health agencies and the National Lassa Fever Multi-partner, Multi-sectoral Technical Working Group (TWG).
