According to Naija News, Abbas decided to retract the bill on Wednesday following significant public opposition. The proposed legislation would have imposed a 10-year prison sentence, a fine of N5 million, or both for individuals who refuse to recite the national anthem and pledge.

The decision, as announced by Musa Krishi, the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and a thorough review of the current national climate. Krishi emphasized that this move reflects Tajudeen’s commitment to avoiding any legislation that might disrupt national peace and unity.

Reacting to the news, Ugochinyere, who chairs the House Committee on Petroleum Resources Downstream, lauded the Speaker’s decision. He highlighted that it demonstrates the legislative agenda’s alignment with citizens’ needs and the importance of listening to foster unity.

Ugochinyere stated, “I commend Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas for withdrawing the Counter Subversion Bill and related drafts. This action shows that the 10th House of Representatives is committed to addressing citizens’ concerns and meeting their expectations. It is a clear indication that the House is dedicated to serving the people’s interests and responding swiftly to their needs.
