A Magistrate Court in Ilorin sentenced 40 individuals to three months in prison each on Friday for violating Kwara State’s Environmental Law. Magistrate Saidu Tunde Abdulkareem imposed a three-month jail term on each defendant but allowed for an alternative fine of 50,000 naira, in accordance with Section 5, Subsections 1-4 of the State Environmental Law. Thirty-one of the defendants were found guilty of indiscriminate refuse disposal, while the remaining nine were convicted of illegal scavenging.
State Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Hon Nafisat Buge, supported the judgment, explaining that the enforcement of environmental laws aims to prevent disease outbreaks, flooding, and other hazards associated with improper waste disposal. She noted that a recently established task force began its operations on Tuesday, making arrests for violations, and highlighted the role of a Mobile Court in prosecuting offenders.
Buge emphasized that public awareness campaigns have been underway to address these issues. She reminded that the state House of Assembly had previously enacted legislation prohibiting scavenging within Ilorin’s metropolis, with such activities now limited to a designated dump site on the Sokoto Aiyekale expressway. The Ministry has also engaged in physical and media advocacy to curb indiscriminate refuse dumping.
