Speaking at the 6th Annual General Assembly of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA) in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, outlined his government’s efforts to ensure the independence and adequate funding of anti-corruption agencies, while encouraging lawful operations.

Tinubu recommended this approach to other West African states, emphasizing that corruption undermines societal progress and erodes public trust. “Corruption is a significant barrier to our development, and as leaders, we must confront it with resolve and coordinated actions,” he said.

The President stressed the importance of implementing the ECOWAS protocol to enhance regional cooperation and urged member states to move from rhetoric to tangible actions. “We’ve seen positive results from the collaboration between NACIWA and ECOWAS, but we must continuously innovate and adapt our strategies to address the evolving nature of corruption,” he added.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, in his keynote address, underscored the need for regional and global cooperation, pointing out the severe impact of illicit financial flows, which cost Africa $88.6 billion annually. Tuggar called for a culture of integrity and transparency to counter the link between corruption, insecurity, and financial crimes.

Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, highlighted the importance of legal cooperation among member states to effectively address corruption and ensure successful prosecution. He emphasized that the Attorney-General’s office remains committed to supporting NACIWA’s efforts.

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede praised the Nigerian government’s donation of a permanent NACIWA headquarters in Abuja, marking a significant milestone for the organization and reinforcing the regional anti-corruption framework.
