Delta State Tragedy: Police Reveal New Details On Officer’s Role In Fatal Incident
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that the Assistant Superintendent of Police who fatally shot a suspect in Effurun, Delta State, will be prosecuted for murder.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
The officer, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, was seen in a viral video shooting 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, who had reportedly been arrested over a parcel allegedly containing a pistol and live ammunition.
Edafe said Usman and other members of his operational team have been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.
Describing the incident as disturbing and difficult to justify, he said the officer’s conduct was a clear breach of police operational guidelines.
He stated, “That policeman, I just don’t understand what went wrong. It is a very sad incident. In my years as PRO, this is one of the most difficult cases to explain.”
He added that while the police do not attribute misconduct to supernatural causes, the actions of the officer were “unexplainable.”
The incident reportedly occurred on April 26, 2026, after police operatives in Effurun responded to intelligence that Ogidi had been arrested by members of a motor park while allegedly attempting to transport a parcel suspected to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
According to Edafe, the suspect had already been restrained before the police arrived and was not posing any threat at the time of the shooting.
He said, “The instruction was to bring the suspect in. Instead, the officer shot a man who was already tied up and begging for his life. It is not justifiable in any way.”
The police spokesperson assured the public that the officer would not be protected from prosecution, stressing that he would face murder charges in court.
He also confirmed that the entire five-man police team involved in the operation had been moved to the Force Headquarters because they failed to intervene or restrain their colleague during the incident.
Edafe noted that officers are expected to prevent misconduct within their teams, adding that none of them attempted to stop the shooting as seen in the viral video.
He concluded that every suspect is entitled to the right to life and insisted that abuse of firearms by security personnel will not be tolerated.
