Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 6th Annual General Assembly of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA) in Abuja, Tinubu highlighted corruption as a major barrier to national progress. He emphasized that a united front is necessary to address this issue effectively.
“Corruption significantly hinders our progress, erodes trust, and disrupts fair resource distribution. As leaders, we must address this challenge with unwavering determination and coordinated efforts. Over the past year, we have strengthened anti-corruption agencies by ensuring their independence and proper funding,” Tinubu said.
As Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Tinubu urged member countries to align their legal frameworks, enhance cross-border cooperation, and invest in technologies to combat corruption. He called for a shift from mere rhetoric to actionable measures, including promoting transparency in public procurement and involving civil society and the media in anti-corruption efforts.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar reported that African countries lose approximately $8.6 billion annually to illicit financial flows, which weakens economies and deepens poverty. He stressed the need for global support in enhancing financial system transparency and eliminating safe havens for illicit funds.
Tuggar emphasized that international cooperation is crucial, citing the UN Resolution on Tax Cooperation, which Nigeria supports. He called for better global partnerships to track and repatriate stolen resources and criticized universal laws that often disadvantage developing countries.
He also highlighted the impact of cryptocurrency on local currencies, specifically noting Nigeria’s challenges with Binance and its effect on the Naira’s exchange rate. Tuggar stressed the need for collective action against such financial manipulations.
“The fight against corruption is essential for our continent’s future. It’s a battle for our economic stability and the well-being of future generations,” Tuggar concluded.
