Several northern elites and politicians dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu’s administration have also called for Jonathan’s return to the presidency.
In an interview with Punch, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi endorsed the position of Governor Mohammed and northern elites. Abdullahi highlighted that Mohammed, a former minister in Jonathan’s administration, understands the current challenges and future needs of the country. He argued that Jonathan, who voluntarily conceded defeat and facilitated a smooth transition process in his previous tenure, exemplifies the kind of leadership needed.
Abdullahi dismissed concerns about the potential discontent of PDP’s former presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. He stated that Atiku, despite being a significant party figure, cannot dictate the party’s choice for 2027. Abdullahi emphasized that the PDP must consider a broad range of factors and support a candidate like Jonathan, whose leadership could address the country’s current issues effectively. He noted Jonathan’s previous successes in stabilizing the economy and controlling inflation as evidence of his capability to lead.
