Dr. Nimi Ngo Briggs, President of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital chapter of NARD, highlighted this development during a news briefing in Port Harcourt. He commended Governor Fubara for his commitment to advancing healthcare in the state through the residency training grant.
Briggs acknowledged that while the RSUTH is currently facing a shortage of staff, the governor’s plans to employ additional doctors, nurses, and support staff will address this gap. He emphasized that the grant, which supports research and increases service delivery in the health sector, boosts resident doctors’ morale.
“This grant empowers us to advance research, foster innovation, and maintain high standards of healthcare for the people of Rivers State and beyond,” Briggs said. He described the residency program as crucial for developing future medical specialists and improving healthcare services.
Briggs also noted that Governor Fubara’s investment in the health sector and timely payment of grants helps mitigate brain drain and keeps talented medical professionals in the region. This support not only motivates doctors but also enhances their capacity to deliver excellent healthcare.
He added that this initiative positions Rivers State on a global scale, encouraging knowledge sharing and collaboration within the medical community. The support also aligns with the Medical Residency Training Act of 2017, promoting effective residency training and research funding.
