Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, expressed concerns about the potential instability that could have arisen if Alhaji Atiku Abubakar had won the presidency in 2023. George highlighted that Atiku’s selection as the PDP’s presidential candidate, while the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, also came from the north, caused deep rifts within the party. He noted that Ayu should have stepped down before the election to maintain party unity. George stated, “It was the emergence of Atiku from the north as a presidential candidate that completely disorganized the norm of the party.”
He elaborated that the manipulation of the party’s processes to favor Atiku’s candidacy marked the beginning of the party’s problems. “The moment we interfered with it, manipulating the whole process to satisfy Atiku, that’s where the problem started,” George said, emphasizing the need for truth and transparency within the party. He pointed out that Atiku’s candidacy effectively split the PDP in two.
George further speculated that had Atiku won the 2023 election, the country would have faced significant instability. He argued that Nigerians would not have accepted another northern presidency immediately after Buhari’s term. “If Atiku had won that election, you think this country would have been stable?” he questioned, highlighting the expectation that the presidency should rotate to the south after eight years of northern leadership.
Discussing the current state of the PDP, George mentioned that the party is currently facing severe internal conflicts, with multiple factions vying for control. He expressed doubt about the party’s ability to resolve these issues and criticized its lack of moral authority to challenge the current government.
George also revealed that he declined an appointment to the PDP’s Disciplinary Committee, which was established to address members who allegedly worked against the party in the 2023 elections. He refused to serve under Chief Tom Ikimi, the committee’s chairman, due to differences in party hierarchy and experience. “You don’t make me a member under somebody that I know in terms of the hierarchy of the party
