The federal government has announced that only eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic are accredited to award degrees to Nigerians. This information was revealed by Education Minister Tahir Mamman on Sunday…..CONTINUE READING

Mamman reiterated that the federal government stands firm on its decision to revoke approximately 22,700 certificates issued by “fake” universities in these neighboring countries. He explained on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics that this measure is not harsh but necessary, as these fraudulent degrees harm Nigeria’s reputation and have been recognized as invalid by authorities in Togo and Benin Republic.

Earlier, during a press conference marking his one year in office, Mamman had revealed that over 22,700 Nigerians had obtained fake degrees from these countries. This action was part of a broader investigation into degree certificate fraud involving both foreign and local institutions in Nigeria. The investigation was prompted by a report where a Nigerian journalist secured a degree from a Benin Republic university in under two months and used it to join the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Mamman clarified that the federal government now officially recognizes only three universities in Togo and five in Benin Republic. The approved institutions are:

**Togo:**
1. Université de Lomé
2. Université de Kara
3. Catholic University of West Africa

**Benin Republic:**
1. Université d’Abomey-Calavi
2. Université de Parakou
3. Université Nationale des Sciences, Technologies, Ingénierie et Mathématiques
4. Université Nationale d’Agriculture
5. Université Africaine de Développement Coopératif

The minister condemned the practice of obtaining fake degrees through racketeering, often involving domestic and foreign officials, and urged the government and private sector to address the issue. He also announced that efforts would be made to identify government employees holding such fraudulent certificates.
