The federal government has announced that only eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic are accredited to award degrees to Nigerian students. Minister of Education Tahir Mamman revealed this on Sunday.
Mamman also affirmed that the government’s decision to cancel approximately 22,700 certificates issued by unrecognized universities in Togo and Benin will stand. He stated on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics that the invalidation of these certificates is justified, as they were issued by institutions deemed fraudulent by both Nigerian authorities and the governments of these West African countries.
During a press conference marking his one-year tenure, Mamman disclosed that over 22,700 Nigerians hold fake degree certificates from these institutions. This move is part of a broader investigation into certificate fraud, initiated after a journalist acquired a degree from a Benin Republic university in under two months.
The minister specified that only three universities in Togo and five in Benin are officially recognized for Nigerian degree programs. The accredited universities in Togo are:
1. Université de Lomé
2. Université de Kara
3. Catholic University of West Africa
In Benin Republic, the approved institutions are:
1. Université d’Abomey-Calavi
2. Université de Parakou
3. Université Nationale des Sciences, Technologies, Ingénierie et Mathématiques
4. Université Nationale d’Agriculture
5. Université Africaine de Développement Coopératif
Mamman emphasized that many individuals with fraudulent certificates never even visited these countries but obtained their degrees through racketeering. He urged both government and private sector employers to identify and address cases of fraudulent certification.
