Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Bola Tinubu of misrepresenting Nigeria’s fuel subsidy situation during his international visits. In a statement released on Sunday, Atiku alleged that Tinubu made false claims about the removal of petrol subsidies while in New York, Qatar, and France.
Atiku, who was the 2023 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed concerns that Tinubu’s statements could negatively impact Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Nigeria. He pointed out that despite the purported removal of the subsidy, petrol shortages persist in the country.
Atiku criticized the Tinubu administration for what he described as a deceptive subsidy regime, citing recent financial statements from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). He accused Tinubu of not only misleading international audiences but also failing to address ongoing subsidy payments, which the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates will represent 3% of Nigeria’s GDP this year. He also noted that despite these payments, petrol scarcity remains unresolved and expressed concerns about the potential misuse of subsidy funds for political purposes.
